This article is about a group of students from Streamwood High School. They had a wind powered generator that ended up winning them a state completion in a Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. They could win up to $200000 if they place in nationals. Their group consist of both teachers and students from that high school that use as many resources as possible.
One of the seniors, Andrea Greter, said, "Its like a real life experience." This is very true seeing as they get hands on experience working with others and trying to also work together in groups with both teachers and friends. I cannot really see how this does not help kids. The title of this article "Stem Students Create Winning Invention" on its own tells you it is a large success.

Basically John Clouds purpose is to discover how genius are made or how it is creative. He wants to find a method of how you can define a genius whether it is how many articles one has written or how many online references one has. He concludes that kids do not have to have high IQ's to be smart or a genius. They just need to have encouragement to learn and continue to strive to be smarter. I can use this info to motivate myself and tell myself that even tho I may not be an Einstein, I can still be a genius in my own way.
His views can relate a lot about my project. I do believe that students should learn or have time to learn about what they want to know. Many kids are starting to fall asleep and drop out of school in america because of how the new education system is starting to become flat. My genius hour project will show and help kids out that want to learn about how to eat before they play a sport or just take care of themselves in general. But this is only if they want to learn about my nutrition suggestions. I agree with most of his other points as well but I do believe schools are starting to help out kids and asking what they can do to make school more enjoyable. I can learn that I need to present my project to a group and when I do, should make it a happy and funny presentation. Last thing I learned is that I need to enjoy what I am doing and just have fun.
The authors view point of a genius is not based on IQ, SAT scores, or even about being smart; it is about being able to answer questions with several answers or being able to ask questions that no one has asked before. He see's genius as the guy that can answer the question with many different answers instead of just one. For example if I asked you what is one half of thirteen, you would answer six and one half. A genius would be able to answer that question with answers like 6.5 or 1/3. Answers like this that most people would never think of or use. There are many strategies that genius's use to solve problems but the main three I would list are genius's look at problems in many different ways, make their thoughts visible, and prepare themselves for chance. Genius hour encourages me to have new idea's if my project is to fail. If I fail or do not succeed, that should motivate me for new ideas on a new project or how I can improve for the next project to come. I am very excited to have these strategies in mind as I continue my project.
The article I just read was about Emily born and why missing genius hour upset her. She was sad because in genius hour, you can choose your own topic to learn and research instead of a teacher assigning a research project. The article also explains where genius hour came from. Its origin was from Googles 20 time. This is where Google employees can spend 20% of there time on a project of there own liking. Its nickname is 20 time. The most important aspect of this article is when it explains that with genius hour, you are aloud to fail. They want to make it clear it is okay to fail and if you do, learning from that failure is all they ask from you. Students are in today's world are all about standardized tests and the teachers just wanted to give an opportunity to students on what they want learn. Towards the end of the article they talk about creating an idea is the most difficult task of genius hour. The teachers make sure to help out the students and provide them with examples and ideas. The article ends by saying that there is not a lot of freedom in education and teachers want to give students the time to learn about there own interests.
My plan for the next few months is to create a small booklet of how to eat before a sporting event. I play soccer but I will use other sport examples as well. Anyways this booklet will consist of a title page, tips of what to eat, some different meals, my experiences with good/bad eating habits, and a picture page. Most pages will consist of both words and pictures and will be around 8 pages. My plan for now is to start organizing photos and meal ideas to put into the booklet. This project will not be easy to create and will take sometime to accomplish this task. To make sure this project will be accomplished on time is to get as much done on Friday's as possible.
